Over Interim-pay

InterimPay founder Maarten Wienbelt is committed to the interests of flex workers.
The founder of InterimPay, Maarten Wienbelt, knows what he is talking about. Since 1994 he has been active in employment agency and an experienced director in the playing field of flexible work. His latest initiative, InterimPay, is the reflection of his vision of how the labor market can and should change. In an open conversation, he explains how daily payment has enormous advantages for both flex workers and employers.
With flex workers, he refers to people who work temporarily or on an on-call basis, without fixed hours or long-term obligations. A very diverse group, consisting of, for example, students who are looking for flexible work in addition to their studies, elderly people who want a side income and others who appreciate the freedom to work wherever and when it suits them. Especially for this group, daily payment is a godsend, according to Wienbelt.
Flexibility for a new generation
Wienbelt has always kept his finger on the pulse in a labor market that is constantly changing. “What I see is that the labor market has changed a lot. More and more people want to determine the balance between work and private life themselves and be able to work flexibly. Statistics Netherlands figures show that 41 percent of workers in the Netherlands now do not have a fixed employment contract – that is 2.7 million people with a flex contract and 1.2 million freelancers.” Employers also benefit from this development: “Many employers need that flexibility. Whether it is the hospitality industry, where the workforce depends on the weather, or sectors that experience peaks and declines in workload – think of the event industry, caterers, retail and logistics. They are looking for ways to quickly deploy reliable labor, without being stuck with complex administrative burdens.”
Every day salary – a revolution in payment systems
The core of InterimPay is the daily payment of hours worked. Wienbelt explains that this approach is based on trends and research, such as a recent American survey that showed that 71% of employees leave their employers due to payment problems. “Payment problems? As an employer, you are not allowed to have that,” he says emphatically. The whole core of InterimPay is that we pay flex workers daily. That certainty makes a huge difference. Research shows that 84% of flex workers prefer to work for a client who pays quickly. It strengthens the relationship and builds trust.” And according to Wienbelt, that is essential in this time. There is a huge shortage of staff, and paying directly not only makes an employer extra attractive, it also ensures that employees stay connected longer. After all, it is easy for flex workers to switch to a new assignment and there is plenty of work.
“Compliance without worries” – certainty for the client
InterimPay was developed with employers in mind who must comply with the complex laws and regulations surrounding the payment of flexible workers. “Employers must comply with all kinds of rules today, from tax payments and pension contributions to avoiding false self-employment,” explains Wienbelt. “With Interim-Pay, we take over that care and ensure that the client remains compliant.” In practice, it is very simple: the supervisor approves the hours worked at the end of the day, and immediately a signal goes to the bank.
Start in Arnhem and then the whole world
In the first phase of their growth, InterimPay will focus on companies (and flex workers) in the Arnhem – Nijmegen region. But of course, the ambitions are not limited to the region. InterimPay strives to provide employers and employees throughout the Netherlands and eventually worldwide with a platform that effortlessly combines flexibility and regulatory compliance. Wienbelt therefore concludes the interview with the words: “I believe that everyone has the right to work that suits him or her – and that also includes an appropriate and timely reward. With InterimPay we make this possible for a new generation of workers and for companies that want to remain flexible. In short: worked today. Paid today.”
